Pearl Class
We are a Local Authority funded provision for primary aged children (KS1 and KS2).
Our Centre provides full-time places for up to fourteen children, which are allocated by East Sussex County Council’s SEND Panel. Last year (2020) we underwent an impressive rebuilding of our facilities and our children now have new purpose-built classrooms and therapy rooms.
All children on roll have Education and Health Care Plans for severe and specific language needs. Our Language Centre is designed to offer intensive specialist interventions with specialist teachers, TAs, and Speech and Language Therapists, with the aim of returning pupils to mainstream with all the necessary Speech and Language skills they need. An NHS Speech and Language Therapist also spends dedicated time with the children in our Language Centre to provide 1:1 therapy and liaise with staff. All of our children in the Language Centre access individualised speech/language programmes devised by the therapy team and delivered by the staff team within the Language Centre.
All our children have link classes within our mainstream and develop positive relationships with children of their own age in the wider school. As their language skills develop through the intensive interventions our children access different lessons with their link classes, with support, to encourage them to generalise their skills and knowledge. This is part of planning for their transition back into mainstream education when they are ready.
Relationships between pupils in the language unit are strong. Pupils support each other well. There are appropriate opportunities for pupils to join their peers within the main school for assembly, PE lessons and breaktime. OFSTED report 2019
We welcome visits and are happy to arrange tours of our Language Centre. Please note that our Centre is not able to offer placements, this is overseen by East Sussex County Council.
